Tips for using call numbers from the online catalog to find a book

You can search for items in the Genealogy Room using the online catalog. The call number will help you find the item. An example search is below:

First, note the call number highlighted (the numbers and letters after Call #). If the call number starts with a number (in this example: 929.107), then the resource will most likely be on a bookshelf. Note that books in the genealogy room are organized by subject (Pennsylvania County, General Genealogy, Out of State, Cambria County). Since the example resource is about families in the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia, it would be located in the “Out of State” section (B3 on the map).

The call numbers of some resources may start with letters. In the example above, the call number starts with VFL. This means the item is located in a filing cabinet or other location that is not a regular bookshelf. Call numbers that begin with FH could on the bookshelf or in the Family History Files (C2-C4). Call numbers starting with VHP are part of the Veterans History Project (C5). If you are unsure where a resource might be located or can’t find what you are looking for, you can always ask a librarian to help you!
